Nostalgic Warehouse Q&A

Nostalgic Warehouse Questions and Answers

Find answers to common questions about Nostalgic Warehouse door knobs, latches, privacy spindles, deadbolts, mortise locksets, and door thickness requirements.

Why is my latch turning 360 degrees?

The tubular latch provided is called a self-handing latch, which allows the installer to easily adjust the latch to accommodate a left-handed or right-handed door. The face plate must be installed to hold the tongue in position.

Do your Crystal or Porcelain door knobs come in any other colors?

Our Waldorf and standard Crystal knobs are offered only in clear. Porcelain knobs are only available in white.

Why is my knob hard to turn?

This is usually caused by binding from installing the knob too tightly. Loosen by turning the knob counter-clockwise one turn at a time until it moves freely.

If needed, remove the knob and verify the spindle is centered in the backplates.

Why do my screws slip through the holes in the edge of the door?

You likely did not use the face plate included with the tubular latch. It comes with the correct screws for proper installation.

Why does my knob turn 360 degrees?

The set screws securing the knob to the spindle may have loosened. Tighten them using the included Allen wrench.

If needed, add a drop of clear nail polish to keep the screws in place.

Why is my privacy spindle in two pieces?

This split spindle allows independent function between interior and exterior knobs. Screw both halves together fully, then back off about 1.5 turns for proper operation.

What do I do if someone locks themselves in a room?

Use the small hole on the exterior plate. Insert a paperclip or similar tool and gently push to unlock the door.

How should I order split finishes?

Please contact us to place a custom split finish order.

Do you carry deadbolts?

Yes, we offer single cylinder deadbolts for exterior door security.

Are your mortise locksets designed for older houses?

Yes. They are designed to retrofit most older doors and work with existing mortise cases.

What is the difference between mortise, privacy, passage, and dummy?

Mortise

Used in older doors; can function as privacy or passage with a skeleton key.

Passage

Non-locking, ideal for closets and hallways.

Privacy

Locking interior function for bedrooms and bathrooms.

Dummy

Non-functional, decorative hardware.

What door thickness do your doorsets fit?

Deadbolts

Fits doors between 1-3/4" and 2-1/4".

Standard Doorsets

Fits doors between 1-3/8" and 1-3/4".

Note

Extended spindles are required for thicker doors (special order).
