    Schlage lock company was named after the man who founded the company in 1920, Walter Schlage. It is pronounced 'Sh-l-ague'. Basically, take the word 'vague', but add the 'Shl' in place of the 'V'.

  7. Is Schlage better than other brands of locks?
    Schlage is one of the most well known and oldest brands of door locks available. With a lifetime mechanical warranty and their offering of popular styles, it is hard to go wrong with a Schlage lock. There are other brands that offer solid brass construction and custom designs that are not available with Schlage, but you won't necessarily get better performance from those brands. Schlage residential locks are made of zinc die-cast, similar to comparable brands like Kwikset, Sure-Loc, Weiser, Weslock, and more. In that segment, Schlage is on the higher end of quality and dependability.

  8. Are Schlage door levers reversible?
    Yes, Schlage door levers are reversible with the exception of single dummy levers. You will need to specify the handing on single dummy lever handles. If you are mounting a lever on both sides of the door, you will need one left hand and one right hand.

  9. How does a Schlage privacy lock work?
    Schlage privacy locks have a turn button on the lever. Turn the button to lock from the inside. Upon exit, turn the lever and the lock mechanism releases.

  11. How do you identify a Schlage lock?
    The majority of Schlage locks will have the company's name stamped into the exterior face of a deadbolt. Check the external side of your door to see if you can find the name stamped on the lock. If you cannot find the name on the deadbolt face, take a close look at the latchplates. Latchplates are the plates found on the edge of your door that surround the latch or bolt. Schlage locks will often have the company name stamped into the latchplates as well.

    There might be the company's name stamped upon the lock cylinder as well. This is the area you would insert your key to unlock the door. However, keep in mind that if it is stamped on the lock cylinder, the writing will be tiny.

    You may also want to check the key you use with the lock. Schlage keys have their unique shape, called a "key blank." Check the Schlage resources section to find what a Schlage key looks like and compare your key while also checking for any stamps on the key.

  12. How do I reset my Schlage keypad lock?
    Should you lose or forget your Programming code, you can restore factory settings, which will restore the default Programming code.

    1. Disconnect the battery.
    2. Press and release the Schlage button.

    The following steps must occur within 10 seconds:

    1. Reconnect the battery. The Schlage button will light green for one second.
    2. Then, press and hold the Schlage button until it lights green and the lock beeps.
    3. Try entering one of the default User Codes. If it does not unlock, start over at step

    User Codes are located on the sticker on the back of your Schlage guide, or they can be found on the back of the keypad lock itself beneath the barcode.

    Both brands feature high-quality materials and security, and both brands provide upgrades to security measures should you need them. Still, Schlage does have a broader technological range than Baldwin, yet Baldwin offers models that may be more aesthetically pleasing with up to 22 different finishes within their Estate portfolio. Both Baldwin and Schlage are reputable brands to choose from. Which one is better comes down to what capabilities you are looking for out of your lock and your budget for a lock.
