One of the greatest responsibilities of a business owner is to ensure that their services are accessible to everyone regardless of their mobility or disability status. One of the many ways that business operators can ensure this is by using ADA compliant locks. ADA locks create a door handle that is more accessible and easier to use than a traditional knob configuration. Certain people with disabilities or mobility restrictions cannot operate a traditional knob-style door. Transitioning to levered door handles, the primary conformance standard of ADA compliant locks on the market, is one of the best ways to ensure people with disabilities still have full and easy access to your business space.
Requirements for Accessibility According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990
The first and foremost requirement is that all door handles are configured as door levers. Door levers are the easiest to operate and create the widest accessibility for patrons and employees alike. People living with disabilities or with mobility restrictions can operate a levered handle without requiring any grip strength, and they can even be operated using a mobility aid such as a cane. These door handles should be installed between 34 and 48 inches from the floor. This enables people who use wheelchairs to operate the door easily. Last, the maximum force needed to operate the door handle cannot exceed 5 pounds.
Visit ada.gov for more information on regulations for businesses and State and local governments.
ADA Locks and Hardware Style Options
ADA locks are determined by their length, projection from the door, distance from the floor, and the operation force required to use them. While business owners may feel limited by door lever configurations, you are not limited in the style and design of your door handle. Here at Direct Door Hardware, we offer a broad range of ADA compliant locks that feature many different metal finishes and aesthetic designs. You can choose a simple locking handle, a non-locking handle, or a locking handle combined with a deadbolt. For your convenience, we have assembled our full stock of ADA locks onto one page to make it easy to choose the best option for your location.
