Construction of Baldwin Door Knobs

Baldwin takes great pride in offering the highest quality door hardware available. This commitment to excellence can be seen in every stage of construction. To begin with, each Baldwin door knob starts out as a billet of solid brass -- which is much heavier, stronger, and smoother than the standard aluminum, zinc, or plated steel used in most other knobs. The brass billet is then heated to nearly 1,300° Fahrenheit and pounded into a specially made die. This process is known as "heat forging," and although it is much more work-intensive than the more common method of casting (which involves pouring liquid metal into a mold), heat forging produces a much better door knob. After being forged, each Baldwin doorknob is trimmed, sanded, finished, and polished -- with much of the work being done by hand. Baldwin door knobs truly are a step ahead of most other doorknob manufacturers, and it's a difference you can feel!

Baldwin Door Knob Functions

Baldwin door knobs are available in several functions:  keyed entry, privacy (bed and bath), passage (hall and closet), single dummy, and full dummy. Each function is used for little different application. Below is a description of each option.

Keyed Entry Knobs

As we've mentioned before, Baldwin offers 3 distinct lines of door hardware: the Prestige Series, the Reserve Series, and the Estate Series -- and there are a few differences that should be noted:

• Prestige Series - available only with the Kwikset SmartKey Keyway
• Reserve Series - available with either the Schlage C Keyway or the Kwikset SmartKey Keyway
• Estate Series - available only with the Schlage C Keyway

Keyed entry knobs have a turn button on the interior side of the knob. They are locked from the inside by turning the turn button. Knobs are locked/unlocked from the outside using a key.

Privacy Knobs

Baldwin Estate and Reserve Series privacy door knobs lock by pressing push pin on the interior rosette. Prestige Series privacy knobs lock using a turn button. You do not need a key to unlock from the outside. There is no key cylinder, but there is a pinhole through which you can unlock the door using the generic tool provided. Privacy locks are generally used on bedroom or bathroom doors.

Passage Knobs

Baldwin passage doorknobs are non-locking. These are great for hall doors or closet doors that do not need to lock, but a latching mechanism is still required. Also, a passage function knob can be used along with a Baldwin deadbolt for keyed entry.

Dummy Knobs

Baldwin dummy door knobs are sold as either a Full Dummy or a Half Dummy. Both options are non-functioning door knobs that are used on doors that do not need a latch mechanism -- like the inactive side of a french door for example. Half Dummies are surface mounted and do not require a bore hole. Full Dummies, on the other hand, do require a bore hole.

Door Prep for Baldwin Door Knobs

As mentioned previously, Baldwin door knobs are packaged with square-corner faceplates, round-corner faceplates, and a circular drive-in collar. Below are some other measurements to consider:

- 2 1/8" Diameter bore hole.
- Backset of 2 3/8" or 2 3/4"
- 1" diameter cross bore.
